Little Children, Heavy Burdens

After finishing our recent series on divorce, we thought it would be appropriate to say a word or two about why divorce places such a heavy burden on children—especially little children.

As many have observed, divorce affects children of every age. The difference is usually not whether they are affected, but how deeply they are affected and how they process that pain.

Today, I want to focus mainly on little children—children who are still growing, still learning, and still depending on their father and mother for love, safety, stability, and direction.

As Christians, what matters most is not first how we see children or how society sees them. What matters is how God sees them.

Why?

Because God is the Author of life, marriage, and family. When we understand these things according to His Word, we can better understand why divorce places such a heavy burden on little children.

So let us begin by asking one simple question:

What are children according to God?

If we answer that question wrongly, we will answer every other question wrongly.

The Bible says:

“Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb a reward.”
Psalm 127:3

Children are not simply ours.

They are God’s heritage entrusted to fathers and mothers.

Parents are therefore not owners.

They are stewards.

Since children belong to God, God alone has the authority to tell parents how they should raise them.

That is why Paul writes:

“Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.”
Ephesians 6:4

One of God’s ordinary blessings is that parents who faithfully invest in their children often enjoy seeing the fruit of that labor bloom in later years—not because they were perfect parents, but because God delights to bless faithful obedience.

Psalm 128 paints that beautiful picture of a God-fearing husband, a flourishing wife, children like olive shoots around the family table, and even grandchildren.

This is God’s ordinary design.

Not a guarantee that faithful parents will never suffer.

But a beautiful pattern that reflects His wisdom.

Why, then, does divorce hurt little children so deeply?

Because God designed them to grow under the loving care of both father and mother within the covenant of marriage.

They are still asking questions such as:

Who am I?

Am I safe?

Can I trust?

Will Dad come home?

Will Mom stay?

Little children do not yet have the maturity to process these questions biblically.

They simply carry the burden.

Long before divorce reaches the courthouse, it usually reaches the mind.

One unchecked thought.

One resentment.

One fantasy.

One lie.

Then another.

Then another.

Until the family God entrusted to parents begins to collapse.

Perhaps someone reading this has already experienced divorce.

Perhaps your children have already carried this burden.

Please do not lose hope.

Remember the gospel.

Christ forgives sinners.

He restores broken people.

He heals wounded hearts.

He redeems what sin has damaged.

You cannot rewrite yesterday.

But by God’s grace, you can walk faithfully today.

Dear fathers…

Dear mothers…

Before you think only about what divorce may do for you…

Think about what divorce may ask your little children to carry.

God entrusted those children to you.

Raise them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

Love them.

Pray with them.

Protect them.

Fight for your marriage whenever God calls you to fight for it.

Not because marriage is easy.

Not because children make marriage worthwhile.

But because we worship the God who designed marriage, who calls children His heritage, and who has entrusted them to parents for His glory.

May the Lord give us grace to be faithful stewards of what belongs to Him. ///
