Life is hard! And marriage won’t make life any easier.
Think about it!
Marriage is an institution two sinners, one man and one woman, agreed to live under the same roof until death do them part. Hello! So, how can marriage be easy? It can’t. Wedding might be easy, but marriage, my friend, is not easy.
But if married couples cultivate love in their marriage, this tough journey of life not only be bearable but also enjoyable. So, the following seven points help us do that:
- Stop comparing your spouse with anybody – instead strive to accept your husband/wife’s unique nature (Romans 15:7);
- Remind yourself that your marriage is exclusive – only two parties in the marriage, a wife and a husband. The rest, including your children, come next. This will always be true if you make your spouse number one in every area of your life no matter what (1 Corinthians 7:2);
- Have filter to your eyes and ears so you won’t give away your sexuality to anyone and anything (Proverbs 7);
- Put to death selfishness in you so you will always make your spouse’s need and desires your number one priority (Philippians 2:4);
- Always strive to set time to listen to your spouse. Just listen! This helps you to know your spouse better. When you know your spouse, you will know ways how to love your spouse;
- Be always considerate of your spouse’s sexual desire and nature. Remember, your sexuality is given to you so you give it to the person you are married to, to their sexual pleasure (this is counterintuitive in this porn-saturated society – porn says, “Take whatever you can take from the other person so you make yourself sexually happy” – the funny part is porn never makes anybody sexually happy but hungry) (1 Corinthians 7:3-6);
- Always remind yourself that you are not a single person anymore, but married. That means you cannot think and do anything without considering your spouse’s needs and desires and, in most cases, without consulting and discussing with your spouse.
You know what I call this? I call it WORK!
Yes, marriage is work and if we always strive to work hard in the things we are supposed to do as married Christian people, we primarily glorify God in our lives and we will enjoy our lives and marriages.
May God help us all married people to do just that! ///
