This Culture in Me

Uffff!

You have no idea how I love this picture!

This is always the way I greet my mom and I am very proud of this Ethiopian culture. I don’t know if this culture is still kept in every Ethiopian family but I am eternally thankful that my parents instilled this culture in me so deep that it is now my second nature.

My dad is with the LORD now but while he was here with us, I always kissed his feet first to say hello to him and I love the way he picked my shoulders up from his feet and kissed me.

My mom does not let me kiss her feet. She always holds me in the middle and I end up kissing her knees.

Honoring my parents is my honor! It is my blessing!

From the Ten Commandments of God, the fifth one comes with a promise. It reads like this:

“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.” Exodus 20:12

‘Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may go well with you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.” Deuteronomy 5:16

Paul writes:

“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” Ephesians 6:1-3

Woah!

You see, our parents don’t have to be educated or should attain a certain status in the society to receive respect from us, their children. All they have to be is our parents.

My friend, when is the last time you express your honor and respect to your parents? It doesn’t have to be by kissing their feet/knees, but by the way you speak to them, by the way you think of them?

If you do honor them, it will be well with you or SHALOM with you! If you don’t, the opposite of shalom will takeover your life.

This is not what I say but the word of God. ///
