Spiritual blindness is the common ailment that is seen in Christians today. We all are vulnerable to have this blindness unless we know how to run away from it.
Jesus’ advice to the church of Laodicea goes like this:
“You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.” Revelation 3:17-18
Notice, Jesus advised them to buy salve from Him so they can put it on their eyes so they can see.
These are believers that Jesus sent the message to. Pride and cockiness made these believers spiritually blind. They thought they arrived to the maximum Christian maturity that they didn’t need anything else.
Not only blind but there were also wretched, pitiful and naked.
What was Jesus’ recommendation to all their spiritual ailments?
For them to come and buy from Jesus, “gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.”
What is this gold refined in the fire?
The Psalmist gives us the answer:
“And the words of the Lord are flawless,
like silver purified in a crucible,
like gold refined seven times.” Psalm 12:6
This gold makes one spiritually “rich.” “White clothes” is the righteousness of Jesus Christ that God credited to us who believed in Jesus Christ. And “salve” used to be an eye pencil women of old used as a makeup but it also had a medicinal effect, it clears away an eye infection.
Wow! Did you see the message here?
The word of God is the one that takes away spiritual blindness so we can see God’s truth as it is.
Paul prayed to the Ephesian church Christians like this: “I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe.” Ephesians 1:18-19a
“The eyes of your heart may be enlightened” – be opened!
So, it is my prayer for you and I that our spiritual eyes, or the eyes of our hearts may be enlightened so we know and live by the truth of God.
The truth of God is the word of God. The word of God is the medicine that takes away spiritual blindness from us so we can “find out what pleases the Lord” and “understand what the Lord’s will is,” (Ephesians 5:10, 17) so we can live for the glory of God. ///
