Why don’t we lose hope in this world?
No, seriously, this is my deep seated question: Why do we still hope that this world will somehow and someway satisfy our needs?
Is this part of “our fallenness?” It must be because I personally sometimes feel like I’ve matured enough not to think that way but I still catch myself thinking, “If I go to the mall and buy a beautiful suit or dress, I will come out of this blue feeling.” Or, “Let me go on YouTube so I can find something to watch and forget all about this life.”
This is insanity, do you know that? It is!
Listen what the Bible says,
““Be appalled, O heavens, at this,
And shudder, be very desolate,” declares the Lord.
“For My people have committed two evils:
They have forsaken Me,
The fountain of living waters,
To hew for themselves cisterns,
Broken cisterns
That can hold no water.” Jeremiah 2:12-13 NASB
“Be appalled, O heavens” – Appalled: Be greatly terrified or dismayed O heavens. By what?
By us, God’s people, who tend to forsake, not the living waters but, the fountain of the living waters and prepare tanks (dig cisterns) which “are no better than sieves” (Jeremiah 2:13 MSG).
You know what that means?
We ignore God who is the source of everything we need in this life (“the fountain of the living waters”) and go to any “man-made” water containers which have holes everywhere looking for water to drink and be satisfied.
Sure all heavens will definitely be appalled at seeing us going through this vicious cycle of insanity every single day!
Oh, my friends, we are created for God and God is everything we need in this life. He is our Fountain of the Living Waters! We find no rest apart from Him.
Jesus said: “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” John 15:5 NASB
Very straightforward, is it not?
“bears much fruit” – what kind of fruit?
Listen: “the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control” – Galatians 5:22-23 NASB
It doesn’t matter where we go in this world, looking for the above mentioned “fruit,” – love, joy, peace, – – -, we cannot find them. All of them are found in Christ.
So, let’s rid of ourselves from this foolish thinking and seeing this dark world as our “fountain of waters.” This world does not know this fountain of the living water, let alone having and giving it to us!
Let’s look up to the True Fountain of the Living Waters! Let’s abide in Him so we find all we need.
“I was glad when they said to me,
“Let us go to the house of the Lord.” Psalm 122:1 NASB
Why was I glad? Because only in Christ I find what I seek/desire/want/long for. ///
