The Westminster Larger Catechism says:
#181. Why are we to pray in the name of Christ?
“The sinfulness of man, and His distance from God by reason thereof, being so great, as that we can have no access into His presence without a mediator; and there being none in heaven or earth appointed to, or fit for, that glorious work but Christ alone, we are to pray in no other name but His only.”
Paul writes:
“For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself as a ransom for all. . .” 1 Timothy 2:5-6 NASB
Listen to what Jesus said,
“Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it.” John 14:13-14 NASB
And Luke records what Peter said filled with the Holy Spirit:
“He [Jesus] is the stone which was rejected by you, the builders, but which became the chief corner stone. And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.”
It matters in what name we pray because the God of the Bible does not hear any prayers offered up to Him in no other name except in Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God.
Our tears don’t move God, nor our long hour prayers and other religious activities. God is fully and totally impressed and satisfied by His Son, Jesus Christ. And when prayers are offered up to Him in the name of Jesus, they mainly glorify God because “God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself” through the Cross of Christ. (2 Corinthians 5:19) None other! ///
