Once in a while, it is good to have a Bible study on this page, don’t you think so?
So, today I want to study Psalm 1 with you. I will point out a couple things and hopefully will leave you alone with the Holy Spirit to study and meditate on the whole chapter.
Here is Psalm 1:-
“1 Blessed is the person who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked,
Nor stand in the path of sinners,
Nor sit in the seat of scoffers!
2 But his delight is in the Law of the Lord,
And on His Law he meditates day and night.
3 He will be like a tree planted by streams of water,
Which yields its fruit in its season,
And its leaf does not wither;
And in whatever he does, he prospers.
4 The wicked are not so,
But they are like chaff which the wind blows away.
5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
Nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.
6 For the Lord knows the way of the righteous,
But the way of the wicked will perish.”
“Blessed” means people who are content and thankful with their lives.
These “blessed” people do not do life according to the pattern of this world. For instance, they don’t take advice from people of this world because they know that their advice eventually leads to death. Also, these blessed people may stumble and sin against God here and there, but they don’t lead a sinful lifestyle (that is what it means to not “stand in the path of sinners” – standing is like settling).
That is not all!
Their life is not ONLY marked by the things they DON’T do or stay away from, but by things they DO or are coming close to.
Look at verse 2.
“But his delight is in the Law of the Lord,
And on His Law he meditates day and night.”
Wow! Did you see that?
“I don’t drink alcohol and I don’t do drugs.”
?
Okay, good! But you only told me what you don’t do. You didn’t tell me what you do. And if the list of what you “do” does not include verse 2, you are no better than the man who drinks alcohol and does drugs. You may have healthy lungs and a healthy liver, but not much more than that.
Do you see my point?
When you run away from the deeds of the people of this dark world, and at the same time run to the Lord and soak yourself in His word, you “will be like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in its season. Whose leaves doe not wither; and in whatever he does, he prospers.” (v. 3)
“A tree” describes you well because the ground you are standing on is firm ground; you do not vacillate or get “tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind” (Ephesian 4:14).
No, you won’t. Why not?
Because YOU ARE A TREE.
Wicked people, even those that have “perfect church attendance,” are not like a tree, but they are like “chaff.”
The wind cannot blow away a tree, but can blow away “chaff,” very easily! While they try to follow the latest trend or mimic people’s lifestyles, the wind blows them away.
Hmm!
Am I a tree or chaff?
Good question! As Christians, we all need to wrestle with this question because our natural tendency is to be “chaff” and obey one of our natural “Ten Commandments:” that is “Be cool and nice with every one.”
We are not called to be “chaff” or nice; our call is to be faithful to the word of God.
But I don’t want to preach here. Too much preaching won’t do anyone any good. But studying and meditating on the word of God. Now that will change lives! At the very least please pay close attention to the points I raised above when you study and meditate on Psalm 1. ///
