The Bible says,
“Now He who prepared us for this very purpose is God [purpose to be glorified at the end], who gave to us the Spirit as a pledge.” 2 Corinthians 5:5 NASB
“the Spirit as a pledge” means “as a guarantee.”
Well, the Greek word that was translated into “guarantee” is “arrhabon” – a partial payment with a promise to make the full payment on a specified future date.
The Greek word “arrhabona” means, ‘engagement ring,’ a ring given to a woman with a promise to marry her on a specific day.
The arrhabon God gave to the church, to each follower of Jesus Christ, is “the Holy Spirit,” – a pledge for Jesus Christ to come back and take us home.
That means, a believer in Christ Jesus has “arrhabona” in his/her spiritual finger that shows that they are betrothed to Christ. This is the most sacred relationship you can find in this world. So, flesh, this dark world and the devil want to destroy this “sacred” relationship, soon to be a marriage, between Christ and the believer.
That is why the warning reads like this:
“Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” 1 Corinthians 6:18-20
Wow! Isn’t this amazing?!
Sexual sin is done against our own bodies because we are “betrothed” to Christ, we belong to Him; our bodies belong to Him. He owns our bodies.
Phew!
Just imagine then if we take this body of ours, Christ’s body, and start a fire in it?
I said that because that is exactly what we do to our bodies when we choose to commit sexual sin.
Job said it well:
“If my heart has been enticed by a woman,
or if I have lurked at my neighbor’s door, – – –
For that would have been wicked,
a sin to be judged.
It is a fire that burns to Destruction;
it would have uprooted my harvest.” Job 31:9, 11-12
This by the way is the A, B, C teaching of Christianity. This is not the kind of Biblical teaching given to matured Christians but for babes in Christ. That is why sexual purity is called basic Christian teaching.
If a person misses the truth of sexual purity, there can’t be anymore growth in Christ. Can a baby skip one year of their life and go to his/her second year life?
Impossible!
It is the same thing! ///
