The LORD’s prayer is something we Christians tend to see as a creed or benediction but it is much more than that. It is actually an outline of prayers, a set of prayers that shows us the most effective way of not only to pray but also expectations, attitudes and mindsets to have when we approach the throne of the Most High God in prayer.
Let’s see for today only one line of the LORD’s prayer:
“One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”
He said to them, “When you pray, say:
“‘Father,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come.
Give us each day our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins,
for we also forgive everyone who sins against us.
And lead us not into temptation.’”” Luke 11:1-4
Notice verse 3: “Give us each day our daily bread.”
Or, “Give us the food we need for each day.” NCV – This is very important point to notice.
God does not want us to worry and pray for our tomorrow’s or next year’s needs.
Why?
Because prayers for tomorrow carry many wrong or false assumptions. For instance, that we know for sure what is going to happen tomorrow and that we will be alive next year.
The question is, “Do we?” We don’t!
What we know for sure is that we are alive today! Praise God! And we know that we are not alive today for nothing but for a great purpose. That is all!
And what we need to pray for today is for God to help us to find that purpose and live for it and since God is the God of NOW and TODAY, He is faithful to give us what we ask for.
Look what the Bible says:
“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:34
Prayer for tomorrow is called worry because it comes from a worry heart and mind. Prayer for today is called faith in God and His word.
Let’s for a second notice all our worries and fears. Aren’t they all about “our tomorrows?” I know, mine are.
But we need to ask ourselves this question: Is God faithful to us for today?
Faithfulness is not only God’s name but Faithfulness is who He is! – “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness” Exodus 34:6b
The Bible says:
“For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.” 1 Timothy 6:7-8
Wow! Did you hear that?
If we have food and clothing for today, we should be content with life.
What about tomorrow?
That is the worry that rightfully belongs to the One who knows everything about tomorrow. It belongs to God, not to us. Praise God!
“Give us each day our daily bread.” – Yes, God gives us for He is Faithful!
God hates to see us act like little “gods” who worry about tomorrow, the day we don’t even know that it exists.
So, what is the message for today?
God is faithful for our daily bread! Let’s rejoice today knowing that our needs are met today by God while we cast all our cares about tomorrow on Christ Jesus for He cares (1 Peter 5:7). ///
