“You look Sexy!”

Have you ever seen a comment that goes something like: “You look Sexy” or just “Sexy” or “Hot” and the reply is, “Thank you” with a smile emoji?

Yeah, we all read that comment and/or maybe wrote that comment thinking that the meaning of “You look Sexy” or “you look Hot” is “You are extremely beautiful!”

But does the word “Sexy” mean “Beautiful?”

Not even close!

Let’s look at the dictionary definition of the word sexy: “sexually interesting or exciting; radiating sexuality.”

So, when someone says “You are sexy,” they are actually saying, “You are sexually exciting and appealing; and you send a sexual message to me through those adornments.”

What about the comment such as “You look hot!” Or, “You are hot!” What does “Hot” mean?

Listen to the dictionary definitions of “Hot”:

“having or causing a sensation of great bodily heat.”

Hmm, what kinds of adornments of a person can cause  “great bodily heat” in others? Or makes them look like a sex-object?

Listen what the Bible says how we need to adorn ourselves:

“Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.” (1 Peter 3:3-4) and

I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.” (1 Timothy 2:9-10)

So, next time, before we decide to drop a word such as “Sexy or Hot” on our friends’ and families’ picture, let’s remember the meaning of those words and ask ourselves if that is exactly what we want to say to them. ///
