What are some of the trivial reasons people get married for?
1. To have “holy sex” and be able to get rid of the after effects of sinful sex: guilt, fear and shame
2. To get rid of the feeling of loneliness
3. To do whatever others do
4. To make families and friends happy
5. To have kids
6. To find rest by marrying somebody
7. The famous one: To be happy
And more!
All these reasons to get married are called trivial reasons.
Gary Thomas, the author of The Sacred Search, said, “The reality is that when we get married for trivial reasons, we will seek divorce for trivial reasons. We need something much more lasting on which to base a lifelong commitment-one that even has eternal implications.”
So, what is the one biblically right reason to get married, a reason that lasts for a lifetime, a reason that has eternal implications?
To glorify God!
How? By finding a person you can grow in Christ and His grace with so that God will be most glorified in and through you when you are most satisfied in Him. (some words are borrowed from John Piper’s quote)
In short, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and ALL THESE THINGS will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:33) – “all these things” – which things?
Things you desire to have as a human being. ///
