Guarding the Heart

Guard your heart because your life depends on it.

The word of God counsels us in many ways to guard our hearts because it is the most important step in our spiritual walk so that we live a life worthy of our calling as children of God.

Whenever I think about guarding the heart, Proverbs 4:23 always comes to mind:
“Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.” (ESV)
And the NCV puts it even more simply: “Be careful what you think, because your thoughts run your life.”

What we watch and hear profoundly affects the thoughts that dominate our lives. Our eyes and ears are the gateways to our hearts. And when these gateways are left unguarded, especially in the age of TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, our thoughts and desires are shaped not by Scripture but by worldly lies and distractions.

Young people today, particularly young men, are bombarded with hyper-sexualized content, often spending hours scrolling through images and videos that corrupt rather than edify. Science shows us that for young men, visual stimuli are closely linked to the part of the brain responsible for sexuality. Combine that with peer pressure, social norms, and ungodly narratives, and it’s no wonder many feel defeated in their walk with Christ.

Yet Scripture calls us to vigilance. The Bible describes how Eve was led into sin not only by listening to the serpent but by seeing that the forbidden fruit was “a delight to the eyes” (Gen. 3:6). This echoes 1 John 2:16 which warns of the “desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life.”

But we are not left without hope.

Our Lord Jesus Christ, when tempted by Satan in the wilderness (Matt. 4:1–11), overcame every temptation, each aligning with those same three categories of sin. His only weapon? The Word of God.

Victory is possible. Not through willpower, but through abiding in Christ (John 15:4), hiding His Word in our hearts (Psalm 119:11), and intentionally guarding what we allow into our minds.

This is not a sprint; it’s a marathon, a lifelong walk, a battle against sin (Col. 3:5), and we must “be killing sin or it will be killing [us]” (John Owen).

Young believer, you are not like “everyone else.” You are a new creation in Christ (2 Cor. 5:17). Guard your eyes. Guard your ears. Guard your heart. ///
