After Adam lost one of his “ribs”, he became aware of this strange desire he had never experienced before. God knew and prepared beforehand what Adam would want to have immediately after he woke up from his “deep sleep”.
Adam didn’t say something to God like, “I think something is happening to me. I have this strange desire.”
No, Adam didn’t say that. God already met Adam’s desire the moment Adam woke up. Talk about “care-free life,” this is unmatched and unparalleled! Adam didn’t have to go through puberty or anything. Boom! Problem solved right there when he opened his eyes! I’m very jealous of him! Anyways, let me not get off track here.
When Adam woke up and saw Eve, as some Bible scholars jokingly say, the first word Adam uttered was “woah-man” (that is like saying, “oola-la-la” in today’s language). Think about it, as the Bible implies, Eve had nothing on. Talk about “oola-la-la”, this is outrageous.
And from that day on, Adam was never the same again. Instead of doing only what he was accustomed to do, which was attending the Eden Garden, he now had to also attend “a desire” which had never been with him before. That “desire” was a desire to be back to his original nature. That desire, or urge, as Pastor John Piper calls it, is “the urge to merge”. That urgency to merge is called a sexual desire; a desire created by God to reflect the origin of creation and the finale of eternity.
Don’t miss this: If God takes away Adam’s desire, a desire “to merge”, Adam would be nothing but a “machine” who works 24/7. That is why I usually tend to call sexual desire as the one, unique and precious gift God gave to a man so that he would be a human being, not a machine.
Even though Eve was not the one with a missing rib, she had a desire to be back to her original place which was inside Adam. After God took her out of Adam, she opened her eyes and she first saw her Creator (very important for her to first meet the God who made her) and then God brought her to the man and she saw Adam. And God blessed their union and sex began right there in the Garden way before the fall (Genesis 1:28).
After Eve came out of Adam, Adam, instead of running around with lions and giraffes, he began seeking an intimate relationship with Eve. So he always has this desire to be with his “Oola-la-la” because she was found from him.
If Eve was made out of dirt, like Adam, I think she wouldn’t have been sexually attractive to Adam. He might have considered her as one of the animals there and called her with them like: “Okay, giraffe, camel, lion, Eve, horse, turtle, all of you, come over here for lunch.” Oh, no, he didn’t see her like that. He separated his “Oola-la-la” from the others because she was found from him. She came from his body.
Listen what the first Adam, the example of the last Adam, said:
“This is now bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called ‘woman,’
for she was taken out of man.” (Genesis 2:23)
Wow, did you hear that?
“This is now bone of my bones – – – for she was taken out of man.”
Sexual desire came into existence when a rib was taken from Adam. No rib missing, no sexual desire.
In the same way, Jesus, the last Adam, had to be put to death for the Church to come from His side into existence. No Cross, no Church! No going into a deep sleep, no Eve!
Praise God! God put the Lamb of God to a deep sleep and the church came into existence.
After Christ said “It is finished” and went into a “deep sleep,” one of the soldiers pierced “His side” and the Church came forth (John 19). So, Jesus desires to be one with the one who came out of Him, His Bride (the Church) and the Church desires to be ONE with Jesus whom she was found from.
So the Word of God says: “each man should have sexual relations with his own wife, and each woman with her own husband.” (1 Corinthians 7:2b) Why?
Because the one-man-and-one-woman relationship is the Gospel, it carries a story from Genesis Chapter One to Revelation Chapter twenty two, from the story of creation to the end of all; eternal picture of the soon coming wedding of the Lamb of God and the Church.
So, the Bible warns us saying: “FLEE from sexual immorality” (1 Corinthians 6:18); “The Lord will punish all those who commit such sins.” (1 Thessalonians 4:6b) Why? Because sexual immorality defiles the holy and sacred eternal picture of the marriage between Jesus and the Church and in turn destroys human sanity and well-being at every level. ///
